Food for Rainbow Lovers

With winter here, parents everywhere are looking for ways to keep their little ones happy and entertained. What better way than through their taste buds?

This winter, inject a little rainbow into their lives (and it’s fun for you too!). Here are some of the ideas we can’t wait to try.

Rainbow cupcakes

Two of our favourites, rainbows and cupcakes!!! It’s easy as pie… ermmm… cupcakes. Here’s the easy way:

  • Grab your favourite cake mix and make per packet instructions
  • Divide the mix and icing into 4 separate bowls
  • Add the desired amount of food colouring to each bowl
  • Bake those coloured cakes, ice and taste the rainbow!

Veggie rainbow with cauliflower clouds

Healthy food can be pretty (and yummy) too!!! All you have to do is get creative with your plating. Like this:

  • Slice up coloured capsicums into rounds
  • Layer into little rainbows
  • Place raw or toasted cauliflower on the ends for clouds
  • Alternatively, you can swap capsicum for small pieces of chopped carrot, cucumber, blueberries, strawberries etc, and use tzatziki dip for the clouds.

Rainbow cheese toasties

Drooooool. Nothing beats a cheese toastie in the frosty winter morning. Make it brighter and add some colour! (Reaching for the cheese now….)

  • Divide your cheese into 4 bowls
  • Place a few drops of food colouring in each bowl and toss to coat
  • Add your cheese to the bread in rows
  • Toast and enjoy!

Rainbow pancake stack

You’ll have the kids fighting over their favourite colours with this tasty rainbow breaky stack. There are a few ways to do it:

  • Much like the cupcakes, you can simply divide your batter into bowls, add food colouring and go!
  • For a more natural option, chop blueberries, strawberries and kiwis into the pancake mix and stir vigorously. The colour will spread and your pancakes will be even more delicious.

Rainbow fruit and veg jars

Want a different approach to party or park snacks? Jar up your rainbows with some healthy AND tasty treats! We love to do it this way:

  • Fruit jars: Layer your favourite chopped fruit in a jar, then drizzle with a sweet yoghurt dressing. For a little extra pizzazz, you can also drizzle with chocolate.
  • Veggie jars: Layer your favourite chopped raw veggies in a jar, then drizzle with a hummus or tzatziki dressing.

Rainbow layer cake

You don’t need a special occasion to make a special cake. Create some colourful layers like this:

  • Mix your favourite cake recipe per usual instructions
  • Using food colors, create 1 red bowl, 1 blue bowl, 1 yellow bow, 1 green bowl, 1 orange bowl (mix red and yellow) and 1 purple bowl (mix red and blue)
  • Bake each layer until an inserted skewer comes out clean
  • Trim the rounded cakes off, then layer with buttercream.
  • Frost, decorate and enjoy!

Sunny eggs

If you want to go easy on your food colouring, simply play with your food shapes! Here are some ideas we love:

  • You can easily buy egg moulds in interesting shapes, then decorate with coloured fruit and veggies
  • Cookie cutters can be used to cut cookies, bread, cakes and more
  • Place your pancake batter into a squeeze bottle and create your own art in the frypan! Hearts, bunnies, flowers… the opportunities are endless.

Rainbow fruit platter with marshmallow clouds

Be gone judgey party mums! Put out a colourful fruit/veg platter in the shape of a rainbow at your next party. Kids and parents will love you! It’s simple, just create layers in colours of your favourite fruit, then add little bowls of marshmallow (or yoghurt) dip at the ends.
May your winter be as colourful as your plates! 🌈
